The Galapagos Islands are a group of volcanic islands located approximately 600 miles from mainland Ecuador. They are recognized worldwide for their notable biodiversity, high rate of endemism and unique landscapes. Galapagos, considered a laboratory of evolution and unparalleled landscapes, is currently threatened by the presence of invasive species, putting its fragile and unique ecosystems at risk. Faced with this problem, the Floreana Ecological Restoration Project represents our determined response. United, we are committed to restoring harmony in this delicate ecosystem and restoring the exceptional biodiversity of Floreana Island.

OUR PROJECT

The Floreana Island Ecological Restoration Project aims to restore the habitat of Floreana Island to protect and recover its unique biodiversity. This will be achieved through the removal of two species of invasive rodents and feral cats, which will allow the reintroduction of 12 of the 13 locally extinct species.

Project Phases

1. Planning

We developed a solid foundation for the Floreana Project, covering various essential aspects. These include conducting feasibility studies and risk analysis for non-target species, implementing a monitoring plan for native species, assessing environmental and social impact, and creating management plans to mitigate risks. We have also designed action plans and agreements with local families, and developed plans for the management of aviaries and exclusion zones. In addition, agricultural infrastructure has been improved for risk management in rural and urban areas, and we have developed adequate infrastructure for bait application and removal operations, reinforcing comprehensive preparation for the success of the project.

2. Implementation

We carry out the crucial task of eradicating invasive species on Floreana Island. Using a meticulous and varied approach, we executed specific strategies to eliminate 3 invasive vertebrate species. This stage includes controlled aerial dispersal of granulated bait using helicopters and manual placement, ensuring compliance with safety measures in sensitive areas identified in environmental management plans and agreements with the community. The application of bait is scheduled for two stages, essential to restore the balance of the ecosystem, which will be carried out with the utmost care and coordination to guarantee a positive and lasting impact on the island's biodiversity.

3. Restoration

We will take a crucial step towards the recovery of the ecosystem on Floreana Island. This stage focuses on the reintroduction of endemic and native species and the revitalization of the environment. Beginning with the reintroduction of turtles in January 2024, we seek to restore biological diversity and natural balance on the island. This phase will not only focus on wildlife recovery, but also on promoting sustainable development. We will promote the strengthening of agricultural and ecotourism activities, which will allow economic progress for the local community. This restoration is not only an opportunity for the rebirth of the ecosystem, but also for the prosperity of the people who depend on it.
