Closing of GEF project 9282 in Galapagos

The Steering Committee of GEF Project 9282 “Safeguarding Biodiversity in the Galapagos Islands by Promoting Biosecurity and Creating Enabling Conditions for the Restoration of the Ecosystems of the Galapagos Islands” met this afternoon to receive the final products of this intervention.

According to the evaluation, this project met the established objectives such as substantially reducing the number of invasive alien species entering the Galapagos; establishing social acceptance for the protection and recovery of the ecosystems of Floreana Island; restarting ecosystem processes on Santa Fe Island, particularly with the dispersal of seeds as a result of the translocation of giant tortoises; and strengthening the captive reproduction of giant tortoises for future reintroductions throughout the archipelago. In the end, applicable recommendations and steps to follow were established.
